About Meditation – What it is and the Benefits

The Basics of Meditation

Meditation is a powerful tool you can use to rediscover your own inner intelligence. It is nothing new – practiced for thousands of years, it’s not about forcing the mind to be quiet, it’s about finding the silence that’s already there – and making it a part of your life.

Meditation is not about forcing the mind to be quiet, it’s about finding the silence that’s already there.

What is Primordial Sound Meditation?

Primordial Sound Meditation is a meditation technique originating in the ancient wisdom traditions of India. Primordial Sounds are the basic, essential sounds of nature and are used to disconnect us from the constant activity in our mind. These sounds, known as mantras, are individually selected for you and are based on the vibrations occurring at the time and place your birth.
…mantras are individually selected for you and are based on your time and place of birth.

Once we determine your Primordial Sound mantra, we will teach you how to use it to meditate on a daily basis to reawaken balance, tranquility and compassion within. Your Chopra Center Certified Instructor will help you to integrate this practice into your daily routine. And integration into the daily routine is a critical part of the process. Anyone can learn to repeat a mantra, but the key is learning to make the regular practice of meditation part of your life. The most significant benefits of meditation come out of a regular, daily practice. Chopra Certified Instructors are trained to work with students to provide tips and suggestions on integration of a daily practice into the student’s life.

Despite the name, Primordial Sound Meditation does not require that you make any noises or utter any sounds.  In fact, the practice is completely silent.  The reference to Primordial Sound involves the mantra that is silently repeated during the practice.

How do I Learn Primordial Sound Meditation?

Primordial Sound Meditation is easily learned in four short sessions over a period of two days. If you want to learn to meditate, see our What We Do page to learn more.

The Financial Impact on Corporations

It has taken some time for Meditation to become mainstream in corporate America.  However, more and more evidence is accumulating that shows top corporations and their top management are practicing meditation (or mindfulness) to reduce stress and enhance creativity. Benefits of meditation are proven and powerful.

Meditation promotes success by:

  • Enhancing creativity
  • Increasing Clarity and decision-making
  • Reducing work-related stress
  • Boosting energy levels
  • Growing work relationships

You may not know it because they may not talk about it – but your competition is meditating.  Your co-workers are meditating. They know about the benefits of meditation. The Gallup Organization has issued a report called, “State of the American Workplace – Employee Engagement Insights for Business Leaders.”  In the report, Gallup highlights findings from its study of the American workplace.  Interestingly, the report provides the following statistics:

  • Employees who are thriving in overall wellbeing have 41% lower health-related costs than those who are struggling and 62% lower health-related costs than employees who are suffering
Slightly more than half of employees are thriving (58%)
  • There are significant leadership initiatives ongoing at cutting-edge corporations that include mediation or mindfulness as elements of their programs.  Below are some links to excellent articles that illustrate the benefits of meditation in a corporate environment.

Why You Should Learn to Meditate

In its most basic sense, meditation is about sitting quietly for a short period of time, quieting the many thoughts in the mind and experiencing silence. There are many ongoing studies about the physiological effects of meditation. However, we encourage you to try it for yourself. One sure way to determine the value of meditation is to practice it for a period of time and then to determine which aspects of your life you find it improves. If you find it is useful, you will continue to practice. And many people do. Studies have shown that a daily meditation practice can positively impact overall wellbeing.

Some of the many health benefits of meditation include:

  • Lowered blood pressure and heart rate
  • Reduced anxiety and stress
  • Better sleeping habits
  • Increased quality of life and relationships
… a daily meditation practice can positively impact overall wellbeing, including lowering blood pressure and heart rate, reducing anxiety and stress, and generally increasing inner peace.

Doctors are increasingly citing stress as a major contributing factor to most illnesses. A meditation practice should not be considered a cure by itself, but research has shown it to be beneficial for a wide range of health problems.
